1. Classical Gardens of Suzhou
Suzhou’s classical gardens represent the pinnacle of Chinese garden art.
Among them, the Humble Administrator’s Garden is known for its waterscape layout and borrowed scenery, with beautiful views at every turn; the Lingering Garden is famous for its ingenious integration of architecture and rocks; the Lion Grove Garden’s Taihu stone rockery is shaped like a lion, full of fun; the Master of the Nets Garden is small but exquisite, and there are Kunqu Opera and Pingtan performances at night.

Each garden visit lasts approximately 2 hours. Tickets for the Master of the Nets Garden night tour must be purchased one day in advance. It is a unique way to experience Suzhou’s traditional performing culture.
The Suzhou Museum perfectly blends modern geometric aesthetics with the traditional white walls and gray tiles of the Jiangnan region.
The museum’s collection includes precious artifacts such as Wu-Yue bronze swords and Five Dynasties celadon lotus bowls, showcasing Suzhou’s 2,500-year history. The building itself is an exhibit, with the central courtyard’s pool and rockery exuding a Zen-like atmosphere.

Recommended Itinerary
We suggest a visit of 1.5 hours. First, visit the history museum on the west side, then take photos in the central courtyard, and finally visit the modern art gallery on the east side.
The Shantang Street, built under the supervision of Bai Juyi, a poet of the Tang Dynasty, was about seven li long, hence the name “Seven-Li Shantang”.
The streets are laid out with both land and waterways, featuring white walls, black tiles, small bridges, and flowing water, earning it the reputation of being “a microcosm of old Suzhou.” At night, red lanterns are reflected in the river, and the sounds of Suzhou storytelling drift from the teahouses, creating a distinctly Jiangnan (southern China) ambiance.

The main street is free to enter; some smaller attractions (such as the Suzhou Chamber of Commerce Museum) charge 10 to 20 yuan; boat tickets are approximately 50 yuan.
Recommended Activities
We recommend arriving after 4 PM and first sampling local snacks like pan-fried buns and crabapple cakes along the street. Around 6 PM, after the lights come on, you can take a boat trip; alternatively, you can choose a riverside teahouse, order a pot of Biluochun tea, and listen to a storytelling performance.
4. Zhouzhuang
Zhouzhuang is known as “China’s No. 1 Water Town” and has a well-preserved history of over 900 years.
The town’s waterways are laid out in a grid pattern, and taking a rowboat through them is the best way to experience life in a water town.

Recommended Itinerary
It is suggested to allocate a full day or stay overnight. During the day, visit the main residences, and in the evening, take a traditional rowing boat (approximately 150 yuan per boat, seating 6 people; the boatmen often sing Wu songs). The next morning, from 6 to 8 am, there are few tourists, making it the golden time to photograph the morning mist of the ancient town.
5. Tiger Hill
Tiger Hill is known as the “Number One Scenic Spot in Wuzhong”. The Song Dynasty literary giant Su Shi once said: “It would be a great pity to visit Suzhou and not see Tiger Hill”.
The main attraction is the Yunyan Temple Pagoda (Tiger Hill Pagoda), which leans at more than 3 degrees, making it the second most leaning tower in the world and earning it the nickname “Oriental Leaning Tower of Pisa.” The Sword Pool is said to be the site of the tomb of King Helu of Wu, and is believed to contain three thousand precious swords.

Recommended Activities
Walk up the mountain along the central axis, passing the Sword Testing Stone, Zhenniang’s Tomb, and Sword Pool, finally arriving at Tiger Hill Pagoda. A limited-access number is required to climb the pagoda. The entire journey takes approximately 2.5 hours. A sightseeing bus (10 yuan) is available for the descent. Every April, the Tiger Hill Flower Festival is held, where flowers and the ancient pagoda create a picturesque scene.
6.Tongli Ancient Town
Tongli is known as the “Little Venice of the East”.
Tongli Ancient Town is crisscrossed by waterways and connected by 49 ancient bridges. Tuisi Garden is the only World Cultural Heritage site in the Jiangnan water towns, its buildings built close to the water in a compact layout. The Pearl Tower attraction is based on the love story of the Xiju opera “The Pearl Tower.” The ancient town is still inhabited by original residents, giving it a strong sense of local life.

Recommended Itinerary
In the morning, focus on visiting Tuisi Garden (approximately 1 hour), followed by a tour of Pearl Tower. At noon, savor the “Three Whites of Taihu Lake” (whitefish, white shrimp, and silverfish) at a riverside restaurant. In the afternoon, take a hand-rowed boat through the residential area (approximately 30 minutes) to experience authentic Jiangnan daily life.
7. Hanshan Temple
Hanshan Temple was first built during the Southern Dynasties, more than 1,500 years ago. The temple’s large bell, poetry stele, and Ming Dynasty cast statues are all important cultural relics. Every New Year’s Eve, the temple bell is rung 108 times, attracting many tourists to pray for blessings.

Full-price ticket: ¥20. A separate ticket is required for the New Year’s Eve bell-ringing event, priced between ¥200 and ¥500, and must be purchased months in advance.

Recommended Itinerary
It’s best to visit in the morning.
After entering the mountain gate, visit the Grand Hall of the Great Sage and the Sutra Repository in sequence, then go to the Bell Tower and ring the bell three times for 5 yuan (symbolizing fortune, prosperity, and longevity). After leaving the temple, you can walk to the adjacent Maple Bridge Scenic Area (free of charge).
8. Pingjiang Road Historic District
Pingjiang Road is the best-preserved and largest historical block in Suzhou, and is known as “a microcosm of the ancient city of Suzhou”. It is about 1,606 meters long and is built along the Pingjiang River. It has completely preserved the double chessboard pattern of “water and land running in parallel and river and street adjacent” depicted in the Song Dynasty “Pingjiang Map”.

You can choose to go after 4 PM. After your visit, you can watch the lights illuminated in the evening and experience a different side of Pingjiang Road.
9. Jinji Lake Scenic Area
Jinji Lake Scenic Area is one of the largest urban lake parks in China and a landmark area of the modernization of Suzhou Industrial Park, standing in stark contrast to the traditional ancient city.
Scenic Area Details
- The main scenic area is free to enter. The musical fountain is also free to watch.
- Ferris wheel tickets are approximately 80 yuan, and boat tickets are approximately 60 to 100 yuan (prices vary depending on the pier and route).
- Every evening from 19:30 to 21:30, a large-scale light and water show is performed at the “Gate to the East” on the east side of the lake and the musical fountain on the west side (open on Fridays, Saturdays, and public holidays).
Recommended Activities
It is suggested to schedule the visit in the late afternoon or evening, with a duration of approximately 2 to 3 hours. For a daytime lake cruise, you can choose to take a boat trip from Moonlight Pier (30 minutes), which offers views of the Ferris wheel and IFC Mall.
10. Suzhou No. 1 Silk Factory
Built in 1926, this century-old silk factory is a “living fossil” of China’s modern silk industry. You can watch the entire process from boiling cocoons and reeling silk to weaving in the old red-brick factory buildings and learn about the glory of Suzhou as the “Silk Capital”.

Free admission. Experience activities (such as hand-reeling silk and silk printing) cost an additional 50-100 yuan.
Recommended Visit
One hour is sufficient. First, visit the exhibition hall showcasing the old machinery from the Republic of China era, then go into the workshop to watch the workers operate it. The retro red brick buildings within the factory area are perfect for taking photos. There is a silk shop downstairs; there is no mandatory shopping.
Best time to visit Suzhou
- Spring (March to May): The climate is most pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 15-25℃. Wisteria in the Humble Administrator’s Garden and crabapple blossoms in the Master of the Nets Garden are in full bloom, and the Tiger Hill Flower Festival (late March to early May) is worth seeing.
- Autumn (September to November): Clear skies and fragrant osmanthus blossoms. The best time to view the red maples on Tianping Mountain is mid-November. For a better experience, avoid the National Day holiday (October 1-7).
- Summer (June to August): Hot and humid with frequent rain, but lotus flowers bloom in the gardens (Humble Administrator’s Garden and Lingering Garden are the best). Night tours (Grand Canal and Master of the Nets Garden) are a good way to escape the heat. Be sure to bring rain gear and mosquito repellent.
- Winter (December to February): Fewer tourists, off-season ticket prices apply. Temperatures range from 0-8℃, down jackets are necessary. The New Year’s Eve bell-ringing ceremony at Hanshan Temple is unique, but tickets are in high demand, so advance planning is essential.
Practical Notes
- Reservations and Tickets: Suzhou Museum requires advance reservations via its official WeChat mini-program using your real name; walk-in queuing is not accepted. Most attractions accept Alipay, WeChat Pay, or international credit cards. It is recommended to bring a small amount of RMB for donations to small shops or temples.
- Language Support: Major scenic areas have signs in both Chinese and English. Some attractions offer English audio guides or brochures. Restaurant menus in alleyways may only be in Chinese; use a mobile translation app for assistance.
- Transportation: Suzhou Metro is convenient. Download the “Su e Xing” APP to scan a QR code to ride the metro. To reach water towns like Zhouzhuang and Tongli, take Metro Line 4 to Tongli Station and transfer to a shuttle bus, or use a ride-hailing service (approximately 80-120 RMB one way). The starting fare for taxis in the city center is approximately 10 RMB.
- Food: Suzhou cuisine tends to be sweet. If you are not used to it, you can order “salt and pepper” or “stir-fried” dishes. Street food should be eaten hot; choose stalls with good hygiene. 5. Etiquette in Religious Sites: Please keep quiet inside Buddhist temples such as Hanshan Temple. Photography is prohibited inside the main halls. Do not step on the threshold when entering the halls, and it is best to walk around the pagoda in a clockwise direction.
