Golden moments for watching pandas

Understanding these time patterns will significantly enhance your viewing experience:

  1. Best Time of Day: Giant pandas are most active in the cool mornings, especially between 8:30 and 10:30 AM, which is usually their feeding and activity time. In summer, you can arrive as early as 7:30 AM.
  2. Seasonal Selection: In spring (March-May), you may see panda cubs playing outdoors; in autumn (September-November), the weather is cool, and pandas are more active outdoors. In summer, try to choose morning times to avoid the afternoon heat; in winter, pandas will still go out, but their activity may decrease.
  3. Feeding Time Reminder: Each base usually has fixed feeding times (8:30-10:00 AM and 2:00-3:00 PM), which are excellent opportunities to observe panda eating behavior. It is recommended to check the specific schedule in advance.

Trip planning and practical information

Tickets and Reservations:

All panda bases have implemented an online real-name ticket reservation system. Please be sure to make a reservation in advance through the official WeChat account or authorized platform, as tickets may not be available for purchase on-site.

Practical Transportation Network:

  • Chengdu has dedicated tourist transportation services, which are very convenient for independent travelers.
  • Direct Shuttle Buses to Scenic Spots: Departing from central areas such as Kuanzhai Alley and Chunxi Road, these buses go directly to the Panda Base.
  • Alternatively, you can book a chartered bus or private tour through a travel agency.

Other Useful Information

  • Weather and Clothing: Sichuan weather is changeable, with significant temperature differences in the mountains and frequent rain in summer. Comfortable, non-slip shoes are recommended, along with rain gear and sun protection. The base area is large, so be prepared for walking.
  • Payment Systems: In addition to Alipay and WeChat Pay, airport shuttles and the Panda Base shuttle bus also support foreign POS machine payments. Taxis also promote digital RMB payments. Hotel payments can be made in cash, by bank card, Alipay, or WeChat. Before using a bank card, it is recommended to inquire whether they accept Mastercard or Visa.
  • Communication and Internet: Both Chengdu airports have tourist information centers and SIM card sales counters where you can purchase local SIM cards or eSIMs (such as Nomad and Airalo). Major Chinese operators are China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom, with reasonable package prices. If you do not want to change your SIM card, you can rent a portable WiFi device before departure.

Visitor Guidelines and Panda-Friendly Rules

For the health of the pandas and your safety, please strictly adhere to the following regulations:

  • Maintain a quiet environment: Please refrain from loud noises, banging on glass, or making sudden sounds during your visit, as these actions will disturb the pandas.
  • Feeding is strictly prohibited: Throwing any food into the enclosure is strictly forbidden. Pandas have a specially formulated diet, and outside food may harm their health.
  • No flash photography: Please turn off your flash when taking photos, as strong light can damage the pandas’ sensitive eyes.
  • No smoking and no drones: All panda bases are no-smoking areas, and drone photography is prohibited.
  • Maintain a safe distance: Always stay within the designated viewing area. Even if a panda approaches the fence, do not attempt to touch it.
  • Clothing and equipment: The park has many walking paths; please wear comfortable, non-slip shoes. Sichuan weather is changeable; it is recommended to bring rain gear and sun protection.
