Best Time to Visit

The most comfortable months to visit Dunhuang are April through June and September through October. In spring, apricot blossoms are in full bloom and temperatures are moderate; in autumn, the desert poplars turn golden and the sky is a brilliant blue.

  • May–June: Comfortable temperatures (around 25–30°C during the day) and not yet overcrowded with tourists.
  • September–October: Crisp autumn air and clear, azure skies; peak season for Li-Guang apricots (dried) and grapes.
  • July–August: Daytime surface temperatures can exceed 40°C; heavy crowds may detract from the overall experience.
  • Winter (December–March): Few tourists, easy access to tickets (often at half-price), though temperatures are low (around 0–10°C during the day).

The recommended duration for a visit to Dunhuang is 2 to 4 days.

Must-Visit Attractions in Dunhuang

Mogao Caves—A Museum on the Walls

Located 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang, the Mogao Caves constitute the world’s largest and best-preserved treasure trove of Buddhist art. Spanning a thousand years, the site features over 400 well-preserved caves, more than 2,000 painted sculptures, and over 40,000 square meters of murals, all documenting the magnificent moments of cultural exchange between the East and the West.

  • Emergency Ticket (Category B): 100 RMB per person; includes visits to 4 caves and the shuttle bus service; does not include the film or a guided tour.

There are exclusive tickets for foreign tourists priced at 258 yuan per person, which include a guided tour in a foreign language. An additional fee is required for some of the most artistically significant caves, ranging from 150 to 200 yuan per cave.

Visitor Information:

  • Photography, touching, and drinking water are strictly prohibited inside the cave (water vapor accelerates the oxidation of the murals).
  • It is cooler inside the caves than outside during the summer, so it is recommended to bring a light jacket.

Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring—A Miracle Where Desert and Clear Spring Coexist

Nestled amidst the golden dunes, a crescent-shaped spring that has never run dry in a thousand years stands as Dunhuang’s most iconic natural landmark. You can ascend the dunes on camelback, try sandboarding or dune bashing, or simply wait quietly for sunset—the moment the sand mountains are bathed in an orange-red glow marks the golden hour for photography.

Yadan National Geopark—The “Devil’s City” in the Vast Desert

The wind-eroded ridges, troughs, and earthen mounds resemble the ruins of ancient castles—mysterious and majestic. Traveling deep into the heart of the area by scenic bus at sunset, the interplay of light and shadow across the Yadan formations creates the sensation of being on an alien planet.

Yumen Pass and Yang Pass—Images of Frontier Passes on the Ancient Silk Road

These two ancient passes were vital gateways along the Silk Road. Evoking famous verses such as “The spring breeze never crosses the Jade Gate Pass” and “Heading west out of Yangguan Pass, one meets no old friends,” standing amidst the vast Gobi Desert and imagining the camel caravans that once traversed this landscape creates a poignant sense of beauty where past and present seem to converge. Situated approximately 55 kilometers apart, the two sites are best visited together.

Dunhuang Museum—A Shortcut to Quickly Understanding Dunhuang

If you are not yet familiar with the background of the Mogao Caves, I recommend spending one to two hours exploring the museum first. Its collection—featuring Han Dynasty bamboo slips, Buddhist statues, and silk fragments—clearly outlines the history of Dunhuang from prehistoric times through the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Pitch a tent at a campsite behind Mingsha Mountain and savor a desert hot pot; late at night, look up to see a brilliant Milky Way free from light pollution. Some campsites are fully equipped, offering tents where you can gaze at the stars right from the comfort of your bed.

Mural Copying Workshop

At the Dunhuang Art Academy or a cultural and creative workshop near the Mogao Caves, you can receive guidance from an artist to copy a Bodhisattva or Apsara (flying deity) motif onto a clay tablet using mineral pigments, taking home a unique souvenir.

Watch the immersive performance Seeing Dunhuang Again

This is an immersive indoor drama directed by Wang Chaoge, where the audience moves through the space while watching, and historical figures step out from the murals. It is recommended to schedule this experience after visiting the Mogao Caves.

The broth is slow-simmered from lamb bones and infused with local spices and Chinese medicinal herbs. The “Xia Family Mixed Broth” (Xia Jia He Zhi) is highly recommended; adding a portion of white radish helps balance the richness.

Apricot skin water

Made from locally sourced dried Li-Guang apricots, it offers a delicious balance of sweet and tart flavors; especially refreshing when chilled, it is known as the “life-sustaining water of the desert.”

Shazhou Night Market

Located in the heart of Dunhuang, this is the place where the local nightlife is most vibrant and bustling; it is divided into a specialty snack area and a barbecue area.

Transportation Guide

Upon arrival in Dunhuang, you have the following options:

  • By Air: Dunhuang Mogao International Airport (DNH) offers flights connecting to cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, and Chengdu. A taxi ride from the airport to the city center costs approximately 20–30 yuan and takes about 20 minutes.
  • Train: Dunhuang Railway Station is about a 15–20 minute drive from the city center. The most recommended option is the overnight sleeper train from Lanzhou; arriving in the morning after a night’s sleep saves on accommodation costs and preserves your daytime hours. High-speed rail service is also available, with the journey from Lanzhou to Dunhuang taking approximately four hours.
  • Long-distance bus: Scheduled buses are available from Jiayuguan, Zhangye, Jiuquan, and other locations, making this a suitable option for connecting stops along the Hexi Corridor in Gansu.

For local transportation, you can choose from the following options:

  • Taxi: The starting fare in the city is approximately 5 yuan; metered rides are available to both Mingsha Mountain and the Mogao Grottoes Digital Center.
  • Bus: Bus No. 3 goes to Mingsha Mountain (2 yuan); Bus No. 12 goes to the Mogao Grottoes Digital Center (5 yuan).
  • Chartered Car/Day Trip: For attractions on the western route—such as Yadan, Yumenguan, and Yangguan—it is recommended to charter a car (approx. 400–600 RMB/day, varying by season) or join a local group tour (approx. 100–150 RMB per person/day). Hotel reception can usually assist with making these arrangements.
