What are some things to do in Kunming on your first visit?

If this is your first time visiting Kunming, I recommend allocating 2-3 days. Kunming is often called the “Spring City”.

If you have enough time on the day of your arrival, you can experience Kunming’s nightlife. Head to Guandu Ancient Town to enjoy the night view, or sample local snacks and feel the lively street atmosphere at Nanqiang Night Market and Shuangqiao Night Market.

If you arrive early, you can also visit the Kunming Museum to learn about local history, or go to Dounan Flower Market—one of the largest flower trading markets in Asia—to witness the vibrant scene of colorful flower trading.

Kunming Changshui International Airport is connected to the city center by Metro Line 6, with a travel time of approximately 40 minutes.

Kunming’s climate and best time to travel

Kunming, located at an altitude of approximately 1,900 meters, is known as the “Spring City” due to its mild climate and year-round spring-like weather.

  • Best time to visit: March to May (spring, pleasant weather, jacaranda and rhododendron in bloom) and September to November (autumn, sunny weather, golden ginkgo leaves).
  • Summer (June to August): This is the rainy season, but most of the rainfall is concentrated at night, so the daytime is still suitable for sightseeing. It’s worth mentioning that while many parts of the country are experiencing high temperatures, Kunming’s average summer temperature is only around 22℃, making it an excellent summer retreat.
  • Winter: Warm and comfortable, but there is a large temperature difference between day and night, so a jacket is necessary.

Kunming is located on a plateau with strong ultraviolet radiation, so sun protection is necessary regardless of the season—it is recommended to bring SPF50+ sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. When visiting scenic spots such as the Stone Forest, it is advisable to wear non-slip sports shoes.

Must-see attractions in Kunming travel

Kunming boasts a rich variety of landscapes, from World Natural Heritage sites to ethnic cultural villages, each worth exploring.

Dianchi Lake: Kunming’s “Pearl of the Plateau”

Dianchi Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Yunnan Province and the sixth largest freshwater lake in China. It is a must-see landmark in Kunming. Here, you can choose to cycle around the lake, stroll along the lakeside, or take a boat tour.

Unique experiences: During winter (November to March of the following year), you can observe red-billed gulls, and the Dianchi Haigeng Dam is open to the public free of charge. The 108-kilometer-long Dianchi Greenway has been upgraded into a comprehensive travel system integrating cycling, camping, and sightseeing.

The wind is strong and the ultraviolet radiation is intense around Dianchi Lake, so be sure to take precautions against sunburn. When visiting, you can choose to take a boat trip or stroll along the lakeside boardwalk.

Xishan Scenic Area: A superb panoramic view of Kunming

Xishan Forest Park, located on the west bank of Dianchi Lake, is one of Kunming’s most popular hiking destinations. Xishan is known locally as “Sleeping Beauty Mountain” because its shape resembles a reclining beauty. Climbing to the Longmen Grottoes on the cliff edge offers panoramic views of Dianchi Lake and the Kunming skyline.

Unique Experience: Climb the Longmen Grottoes and touch the “Carp Leaping Over the Dragon Gate” stone carving—a local legend says it brings good luck. The Longmen Grottoes were carved into the cliff by Qing Dynasty craftsmen over 72 years and are of immense historical value.

  • Ticket Information: Longmen Scenic Area adult ticket: 30 yuan/person. Electric shuttle bus within the scenic area: 10 yuan one way.
  • Opening hours: Lungmen core area 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Practical tips: Arrive early when visiting Xishan and Longmen to avoid peak crowds. Taking the cable car up the mountain is recommended for a panoramic view of Dianchi Lake.

Stone Forest Scenic Area: A Karst Wonder of a World Natural Heritage Site

Located about 75 kilometers southeast of Kunming city, the Stone Forest is a natural wonder formed by typical karst landforms. It is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is known as “the most wondrous sight under heaven.” The Stone Forest boasts the world’s largest karst landform group.

The scenic area features strangely shaped rocks of various forms, making you feel as if you’re on another planet. It is recommended to allocate at least 3-4 hours for the visit.

  • Ticket information: Adult ticket 130 yuan/person; Scenic area sightseeing bus 25 yuan/person (round trip), it is recommended to purchase, as it takes about 20-30 minutes to walk from the ticket office to the core scenic area.
  • Opening hours: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Transportation: Take the high-speed train from Kunming South Station to Shilin West Station (approximately 20 minutes), then transfer to the scenic area shuttle bus to reach the visitor center.

It is recommended to arrive at 7:00 AM to avoid peak crowds; comfortable shoes are advised for the tour, as there will be a long walk.

Jiuxiang Scenic Area: A Mysterious Underground Cave World

Jiuxiang, located in Yiliang County southeast of Kunming, is famous for its spectacular stalactite formations, underground waterfalls, and underground rivers. Its karst caves, formed hundreds of millions of years ago, are an excellent place to explore geological wonders.

Unique experiences: Explore the wonders of the caves, ride the sightseeing elevator, and take a boat trip on the underground river.

  • Ticket Information: Adult ticket: 60 yuan/person; Wheat Field Cableway (round trip): 120 yuan/person; Wheat Field Boat Trip: 30 yuan/person
  • Opening hours: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

The cave is damp and slippery with many steps, so it is recommended to wear non-slip shoes. Jiuxiang is quite far from Kunming city, so it is common to combine it with a day trip to Shilin or hire a car to go there.

Yunnan Ethnic Village: A one-stop tour of Yunnan’s 26 ethnic groups

Located on the shores of Dianchi Lake, Yunnan Ethnic Village is a large-scale theme park showcasing the diverse ethnic cultures of Yunnan. The village features 1:1 scale replicas of villages representing 25 ethnic minorities, including the Dai, Bai, and Yi, each with its own unique folk customs and crafts performances.
